So, my mom (since she's also my editor) and I met this morning to discuss the game plan for attacking
The Last, and, yes, I am feeling much better!
We pretty much agreed to shift the focus of the book. Since I was feeling like I was really just relaying information to the reader and not being given the opportunity for much creative license, we thought that the rational solution to that would be to not depend so much on information. Instead, the focus is going to be on characters and relationships. It should draw more on the idea relationships are sometimes more important to survival than are resources. There's still going to be that whole dystopia and hope mixture, but add in much more character dynamics. And that will make it more fun both to read and to write. :)
Since I plan for the audience to be, eh, high school or so, I decided that should be the bulk of the book. Plus, that transition from middle school to high school is always interesting. :p So, for research today, I pulled out some old diaries, yearbooks, and other silly things like that to--ugh--relive my adolescent days. Gagfest. I was such a dweeb. But my friends and I did some hilarious things, that's for sure. It was good for a laugh, and now I'm reminded of some of the shenanigans that pre-teens will indulge in when left to their own devices. Heheh.
Anyway. Gonna get to writin'! :D
